Story

Client

Readems is a online platform for literature enthusiasts who get to publish, critique and read their’s and others’ writings.

Goal

Website design that has lots of informative and descriptive content that needs to be communicated in a clear and aesthetically pleasing manner.

Process

Approached with a task to design a usability strategy and appealing, memorable visual aesthetics for the platform as part of a Garage48 48-hour hackathon.

Target group was mostly literature enthusiasts who get to publish, critique and read their’s and others’ writings on the platform.
Partially mapped out content strategy received from the client gave us a good head start. After finalizing the content strategy we moved on with strategizing the usability, and structurizing the general layout and user flow. This guided us in forming an overall concept for the visuals.
Visual language was approached with aesthetics in mind that would also complement the overall usability.
Calm, clean and line-art graphic layout structure, was chosen to give the target group a more familiar environment and allow them to concentrate on the content. For additional enhancement, blue was chosen as a primary color to contrast a general neutral feel and font combination of Merriweather and Open Sans, which gave more intellectual, warm and clear feel.

Final thoughts

The Garage48 hackathon gave everyone a good opportunity to learn in different levels and practice teamwork, as everyone had different roles and responsibilities.
Also to challenge oneselvs, to make it all work and sync at the same time, to follow the intense pace given by hackathon 48 hour deadline.
